Welcome to the NEW internet home of the South Tama Rec Trail

The South Tama Recreation Trail is a multi-use trail linking the adjacent communities of Tama and Toledo, Iowa. A one-mile portion of the trail along the abandoned Northern Iowa Railroad on the west side of Tama and Toledo opened in 2003 and 4 additions to the trail (through 2009) have been completed (or soon will be). Check our Trail Map page for the latest updates.

The trail is being developed and constructed by the nonprofit “South Tama Recreation Trail Project”, a small group of local volunteers with support from the cities of Tama and Toledo.

Walkers, joggers, runners, hikers and cyclists are encouraged to use the trail for their recreational pursuits. The initial trail sections are easy to travel...very flat with a hard packed surface of crushed limestone. No motorized vehicles or horses will be permitted on the trail.

Comments Welcome

This web site now welcomes comments from our visitors.  If you have used the trail (or just the web site) and would like to share your thoughts just click on the "Add New Comment" link below and enter your comments in the form provided.

Cherry Lake Loop Opens in Tama

A new trail "loop", nearly 1.5 miles long, recently opened southwest of Downtown Tama around Cherry Lake.  Be sure to check out this jewel...it's an awesome addition to the South Tama Rec Trail.  The loop features views of some great natural areas around the lake.

Trail users are reminded to extend a big THANK YOU for:

  • Funding from the City of Tama
  • Organization and planning from the rec trail project board
  • Countless volunteers
  • The combined efforts of city crews (and equipment) from both Tama and Toledo
